The Cycle of Success and the 10 Skills of Excellence

The Cycle of Success forms the basis of the GOLFiq philosophy and identifies that best performance does not just happen but is the result of the conscious application of the right skills at the right time. The Cycle of Success developed from the practices of elite level performers suggests that performance can be separated into distinct time zones or areas of performance. These zones are not distinct or separate but are interrelated, influence and inform each other in an on-going cycle of performance and improvement.

The 10 skills of excellence

Included in the Cycle of Success are the 10 skills of excellence which relate to each of the 4 zones of performance. The skills form the essence of performance improvement and the coaching philosophy of GOLFiq and are based upon the skills of successful performers. The 10 skills of excellence represent a truly holistic programme that encompasses all areas of performance. The skills are designed to compliment technical and physical skills and GOLFiq works with players and their coaches to develop a personal performance philosophy to suit their own development, lifestyle and goals.

These are;

  • PREPARATION

Practice – the improvement zone

This zone consists of the time spent away from the golf course and the time you spend trying to improve your golf game. The quality of what you do here will determine the quality of what you achieve on the golf course. For elite professional golfers approximately 98% of their time is spent here and the wonderful performances and shots you witness on the golf course are only the consequence of good quality and holistic practice. GOLFiq will help you develop skills to improve your practice and the fun you experience on your journey to becoming a better player.

Practice – The improvement zone

  1. Achievement Skills Achievement skills are about developing strategies to deal with the external forces that directly or indirectly influence our ability to score. To play to our highest levels we need have a clear idea of where we want to go and how we will get there. This journey is crucial to our development as golfers and yet it is strewn with barriers that are forced upon us or created by ourselves. GOLFiq will provide you with necessary skills to make this process of improvement enjoyable, challenging and importantly successful.

    Benefits to golf

      • Increased motivation towards achieving long-term goals
      • Greater work effectiveness and less stress
      • Increased enjoyment and well-being

  2. Practice Skills Without quality goal directed practice players are destined to a life of golfing mediocrity and frustration. Quite often people dislike practicing as they incorrectly assume that it is repetitive and boring. Beating balls for the sake of it is boring but GOLFiq will show you simple techniques to make practice interesting, fun and challenging whatever time you have at your disposal.

    Benefits to golf

    • Enhanced on-course performance
    • Greater practice enjoyment

Preparation – the readiness zone

The Readiness Zone consists of the time leading up to competition. Top level golfers and athletes have detailed preparation plans which allow them to perform unhindered during competition and as a result they perform with confidence and in full focus. Effective preparation is the key to consistent maximal performance and preparation plans can be complex or simple depending on the time that you have available. GOLFiq works with players to develop a personalised preparation plan that will sow the seeds of high performance.

Preparation – The readiness zone

  1. Mental Readiness Being ready to play is an essential skill for best performance to occur and quite often we are beaten before we even hit the first shot. Mental readiness is a key feature of any top performer and has been shown to be the difference between successful and unsuccessful performance and results. Mental readiness means that you are prepared to play golf and too deal with any eventuality that may occur. When golfers are ready to play your levels of confidence increase and the pressure of competing is well within the player’s control thus increasing the chances that peak performance will be achieved. Simple strategies here can help you play consistent and enjoyable golf regardless of your technical form.

    Benefits to golf

      • Greater on-course enjoyment
      • Less emotional fluctuation
      • Increased self-confidence
      • Enhanced focus and concentration

  2. Physical Readiness Physical preparation is often neglected by players of all abilities and without it peak performance is less likely. Poor starts are a symptom of inadequate preparation and simple organisational and physical skills here can really help the performer to consistent scoring.

    Benefits to golf

      • Greater control over performance
      • Increased self-confidence and reduced competitive stress

  3. Game Planning Tactics in any other sport is a fundamental and yet in golf the “grip it and rip it” approach seems dominant. How you manage the golf course can reap many benefits and save numerous shots drastically lowering your stroke average. GOLFiq can help you develop the skills to play the course based on your strengths to help you achieve your goals.

    Benefits to golf

      • Increased self-confidence
      • Enhanced focus and concentration
      • Improved decision making skills and reduced scores

Performance – the scoring zone

The Scoring Zone represents the time you spend on the golf course competing or playing. With the skills learnt during the first 2 quadrants this area of performance should flow and be more automatic. However, performance can often be complex and confusing and maintaining a consistent psychology is the key to maximal performance and sound execution of the golf swing. GOLFiq works with each player to develop robust and consistent on-course skills to meet the challenge of the competitive environment and to realise potential.

Performance – The scoring zone

  1. Mental Toughness Skills Mental Toughness is probably one of the most important aspects of sport and golfing performance. Throughout the Olympics, coaches, commentators and competitors discussed the importance of Mental Toughness, as without it no matter what physical talents a competitor possesses, if they cannot retain focus and composure under pressure their physical games will break down. As a result, Mental Toughness is now seen to be an important aspect of any performance whether it’s competing nationally, professionally or at the club during Captains Day. However, Mental Toughness is difficult to quantify but GOLFiq helps golfers to attain key skills to help golfers maintain concentration, cope with difficult situations and to control performance in order to excel when it matters most.

    Benefits to golf

      • Less emotional fluctuation
      • Enhanced focus and concentration
      • Greater self-awareness and enjoyment
      • Reduced and more consistent golf scores

  2. Optimal Stroke Focus In many ways all previous skills have lead to this point, the moment of truth! The 10 skills of Excellence clear the way for the golf swing to just happen and perform without the need for conscious thought. However, this isn’t always the case and GOLFiq will provide you with skills to maximise focus and technical performance increasing the chances of attaining peak performance that will allow you to play your best golf consistently.

    Benefits to golf

      • Greater consistency and improved dispersion
      • Enhanced focus and concentration
      • Greater self-awareness and self-coaching skills
      • Reduced and more consistent golf scores
      • Improved pressure play

  3. Game Performing The decisions we make on the golf course have a huge impact on our final scores and yet we are often oblivious to the amount of shots we waste when we play. Although we always prepare to play our best quite often due to the high degree of difficulty in executing a consistent golf swing we are often left on the course in unfamiliar situations and circumstances. Decision making at the point is crucial to our future success and this can be greatly influenced by our emotions and our desire to play our best golf. GOLFiq ensures that golfers develop practical skills in executing a game plan that is robust, flexible and in the control of the player.

    Benefits to golf

      • Improved stroke averages and consistency
      • Enhanced decision making skills and self-confidence
      • Increased focus and concentration

Performance analysis – the growth zone

The Growth Zone represents the time experienced after a round or competition and is often ignored by the majority of players. However, research has indicated that this area is the linchpin of further growth and development and it is not ignored by performers who achieve their potential. GOLFiq provides simple skills that can help the performer to learn from each experience in moulding them into the complete player.

Performance Analysis – The growth zone

  1. Performance Feedback Most golfers have a period of analysis concerning their most recent game by adding up putts, greens in regulation or re-playing their best and worst shots. For successful players however, the after game period is the deciding factor whether the player will grow or stagnate. The best players are simply the best learners and through embracing the process of game analysis they are able to pin point areas of work and practice making their time away from the course productive and efficient. GOLFiq provides simple skills and resources to help players explore and discover the strengths and weakness of their golf games thus helping them work and plot their own pathway to success.

    Benefits to golf

      • Increased game awareness (i.e. strength and weakness)
      • Improved self confidence and well-being
      • Enhanced motivation towards long-term goals
      • Improved practice and achievement skills

  2. Self-Coaching It is no surprise that Self-Coaching is a key component of the GOLF iq philosophy as it is for players and people who achieve excellence and success in their chosen domains. Self-Coaching by its very name implies that players are to take responsibility for themselves, what they learn, how they develop and how they perform in golf. Although GOLFiq is a form of coaching it does not teach people/players how to do things but merely introduces them to an experience in which they can learn and develop their own insights and strategies that they can if they wish, adapt into their own games and cycles. Within Self-Coaching is Self-Reflection which players use to understand and learn from experience. The information that this generates is acted upon via Self-Coaching and therefore GOLFiq is a coaching philosophy that is action orientated and places the player at the heart of learning.

    Benefits to golf

      • Increased self-awareness
      • Improved control over performance and personal development
      • Enhanced motivation towards long-term goals
      • Improved practice and achievement skills
