School of Excellence
(Second chance academies for first class golfers)

Second chance academies are set up for those golfers who are on the brink of national call up, have fallen out of favour with national squads or for those late developers that national squads and teams ignore.

Research (Hayman et al, 2011) has indicated that golfing ability in late adolescence does not determine future performance levels and as a result many of today’s stars have not yet been discovered!!

Currently, selection into national squads depends on achieving certain performance levels at particular times of development and if you miss this opportunity quite often future development opportunities are few and far between. However, being selected for national squads is not a guarantee of future success and the pathways to excellence are numerous.

The professional circuits are littered with players who did not conform to a regular pathway and the journey to success is seldom straightforward. Second chance academies offers those players who feel ‘out of the loop’ or who are late developers (similar to Greg Norman, Nick Faldo) the opportunity to achieve their potential by receiving coaching that is only delivered within elite training programmes.
